Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at MaineHealth Institute for Research

The MHIR Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Workgroup is committed to creating an equitable, inclusive environment that is welcoming to diverse staff, scientists, and collaborators. Our group comes together twice a month to examine how systemic racism impacts diversity in our professional spheres, the biomedical and health services research questions we ask, and how we carry out our research and communicate our findings. Our members bring with them a diverse range of professional backgrounds; we are physician scientists, basic scientists, social and behavioral scientists, data analysts, and administrative support staff. Meetings are 90 minutes and consist of didactic sessions led by experts and individuals with lived experience, as well as interactive group discussions.

The Center for Interdisciplinary Population & Health Research (CIPHR) faculty and staff collectively provide expertise in a variety of research areas and a range of research methods. Our services are available to faculty, staff and trainees at Maine Medical Center, and to staff at other institutions on a contract basis.

CIPHR convenes several research groups aimed at supporting research focused on specific topics of interest. The goals of the research groups are to: foster transdisciplinary collaboration within & beyond the MaineHealth community, share expertise & learning, provide professional development opportunities, and communicate & disseminate research findings.

Clinical Research - Project ECHO | MaineHealth

Project ECHO^® (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a forum for delivering high-quality specialty care to underserved communities. Through monthly Zoom sessions on a variety of specialty care topics, physicians and other care team members connect for didactic presentations and case discussions.

Participants gain insight into specialty care treatment options and increase their capacity to deliver high-quality specialty care. Session participants also receive free Continuing Medical Education (CME)/Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Join a growing network of physicians sharing expertise and information that supports better patient outcomes in underserved communities.

Community-Engaged & Community-Based Participatory Research Training

This course introduces learners to Community-Engaged Research (CEnR) and Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR). It also identifies the ethical and practical considerations particular to the design, review, and conduct of CEnR.

This workshop will describe what it takes to shift power to community through research. The workshop will feature insights from researchers who have built careers in community-engaged work for health equity: Linda Sprague Martinez, PhD (SSW) and Tracy Battaglia, MD, MPH (MED). Learn about and discuss:

How institutional structures and white supremacy shape the academic research enterprise
Steps you can take to co-design and submit research proposals with communities
Resources at BU that will help you grow in your ability to practice the principles of community engaged and participatory research

Faster Together, Enhancing the Recruitment of Marginalized Communities in Clinical Trials

From Coursera, there are 8 modules in this course.

This course aims to teach people how to enhance the recruitment and retention of individuals from minoritized and marginalized communities in clinical trials. We begin by discussing the importance of diversity in clinical research, the lasting impact of past research abuses, and barriers and facilitators to research participation. Next, we explore community engagement principles, effective communication strategies, ways to increase community knowledge and awareness of clinical research, and outreach to community providers. Last, we discuss recruitment planning, person-centered consent, and retention. The course duration is listed as 8 weeks. However, you can work at your own pace and finish the course faster, if so desired. There is no cost to participate in the course; however, there is a fee for obtaining a completion certificate. Financial aid options are available.
