Description

The curriculum consists of 3 modules addressing core concepts for prevention and treatment of substance use disorders. Topics covered include recognition and intervention in patients with unhealthy substance use, overdose prevention with naloxone and the safer treatment of acute pain and short term opioid prescribing. Modules may be completed in any order. Each module will take up to 1 hour to complete. You can start and then come back to a module at a later time. Click the icons below to access each module.

Overall Goal | To enhance physicians’ and advanced practice providers’ knowledge, skill and behavior in the treatment of patients with and at risk for substance use disorder.

Learning Objectives

1. Develop your interest and ability to identify and intervene upon patients with unhealthy substance use.
2. Enhance your communication skills and address your implicit bias when working with patients with substance use disorder.
3. Develop an opioid-sparing, risk mitigating approach to treatment of acute pain in adult patients.

Kristen Silvia, MD.png

Kristen Silvia, MD

After attending UMASS Medical School, Dr. Silvia completed her residency in Family Medicine at Maine Medical Center in 2006. She worked as a family physician at Scarborough Family Medicine until 2016. During her 10 years as a primary care provider, she treated over 100 patients with opioid use disorder with buprenorphine. In 2016, she transitioned from primary care to being the Medical Director for the Maine Medical Partners IMAT program. She also serves as the Primary Care Director for the MaineHealth Opioid Initiative which is developing a system-wide response to the opioid epidemic. In 2018, Dr. Silvia earned board certification in Addiction Medicine. She is currently the Program Director for Maine Medical Center’s Addiction Medicine Fellowship.

Andrea Truncali, MD, MPH

Dr. Truncali specializes in the care of patients with substance use disorders. A graduate of the New York University School of Medicine and its Primary Care-Internal Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Truncali is board certified in both Internal and Addiction Medicine, holds a Masters in Public Health from Columbia University-Mailman School of Public Health and completed a Preventive Medicine-Public Heath Residency at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Truncali spends her professional time providing care to patients with substance use disorder and developing her interest in improving the quality and reach of addiction treatment through education and systems adaptation.

Maine Medical Center has designated this educational activity for a maximum total of 3.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Please note that completion of each individual module is designated for a maximum of 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

2. American Board of Preventive Medicine: Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 3 LLSA credits towards the American Board of Preventive Medicine's (ABPM) MOC Part II requirements. Please note that completion of each individual module is designated for a maximum of 1 LLSA credit towards the American Board of Preventive Medicine's (ABPM) MOC Part II requirements. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting MOC credit.

If you are claiming CME & MOC Part II credits, you will need to follow the instructions located at the end of each module to complete post-tests in CloudCME. Click here to download directions.

Note that if you will be claiming ABPM MOC credit, you will need to:

1. Enter your ABPM diplomate # in the other diplomate field, when prompted.

AND

2. Complete the module evaluation, designating which board you are claiming MOC credit for, when prompted.

Credit will be verified with ABPM annually, at the end of the calendar year.

The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) has approved this activity for a maximum of 1.00 LLSA credit towards ABPM MOC Part II requirements. Please fill out the survey below to have your MOC-LLSA credits reported to the American Board of Preventative Medicine.
